You might like Beam in Thong Lo. It's a hybrid between a cocktail bar and a club, and the crowd is mostly Thai professionals who work in the area. The music leans toward hip hop and R&B with some house mixed in, and the drinks are around 350 baht. It's not huge but the energy stays good until 2am.

If you want something more divey, check out The Club at Khao San But Not Khao San. It's actually down a side street off Rambuttri, no sign, just a red door and a bouncer who might give you a look. Inside it's all Thai students and backpackers who've been in the country too long to count as tourists anymore. A bottle of Sangsom and a mixer is like 400 baht shared between a few people.

tbh theres a spot in ari called j boros that flies under the radar. its a converted townhouse with three floors, each playing different genres, and the crowd is mostly thai office workers and art types. no cover before 10pm and drinks are reasonable like 200 baht for a mixed drink. the rooftop area is chill if you need a break from the noise

if you wanna go deeper try safe room in chong nonsi. basement club with a heavy door, no sign, and the music is mainly techno and house. its tiny so it gets sweaty but thats the point. most people there speak thai and the vibe is more about the music than showing off. just be ready for a 400 baht cover on weekends

Give Glow a shot in Ekkamai. It's a small three-story club that books mostly local DJs playing deep house and disco, and the crowd is almost entirely Thai. Drinks are around 300 baht and there's no cover if you get there before 11. The third floor has an open balcony where people hang out and smoke, so it's easy to start a conversation.

If you want something even more off the radar, head to Studio Lam on Sukhumvit 26. It's a vinyl bar with a dance floor in the back, and the owners are serious about their collection of Thai funk and rock from the 70s. Most nights it's locals having a beer and bobbing their heads, not anyone trying to impress. A bottle of Chang is 120 baht and they stay open until late.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
