So I just arrived in Thailand and currently live near Fortune town, Din Daeng.

I want to stay preferably in Thung Phaya Thai, Ratchathwi district closer to where the "Department of Highways" building is.

Do you think I can get a place between 4k-6k per month? I just need suggestions of areas to go and look for condos/accomodation. Any area that is below one hr away by public transport is okay.

I'm just one person so I don't really care about size as long as it's not a dump - should have a bedroom, bathroom and kitchen for cooking.

Any other advice is welcome.

Thank you.

for that budget and area, try walking the soi's off ratchawithi between the highway building and sri ayutthaya road. there's a bunch of old 4-story apartment blocks hidden behind the main road that don't show up online, i've seen rooms with a separate bathroom and a small cooking counter for around 5k. the catch is no natural light in the cheaper ones, but the location is solid for getting around

if you're okay with a bit more walking, the area around wat sam phraya has some converted townhouses that rent out the ground floor as a studio with an actual kitchen corner, not just a hotplate on the floor. those run closer to 6k but include electric and water sometimes

one thing nobody's said yet - check the classified section of the bangkok post, the physical paper. older landlords still put ads there and they're usually desperate to fill rooms, so you can negotiate a lower rate if you move in same week

yeah 4k-6k is possible around there but you gotta look at the older buildings on the small sois off Samsen Road, like Soi Samsen 12 or 14. those are walk-ups from the 90s, no elevator, but the rooms are decent and some have a separate kitchen nook with a sink and counter. i've seen studios go for 5k there, just walk in and ask the mom at the front desk

for the kitchen thing, honestly most places in that range will just give you a hotplate in the room corner not a real kitchen. if you want actual cooking space check the old row houses near the canal on Soi Rang Nam, some have been split into apartments with a tiny kitchen alcove. they're not pretty but they work

also try the Thai Facebook groups for "หอพัก ราชเทวี" there's a bunch where owners post rooms directly, way cheaper than the agent sites. just search in Thai and you'll find stuff under 6k that never hits DDproperty

honestly 4-6k is tight but doable if you go a bit further out. try walking around the soi's off Phra Ram 6 near the highway office, there's older apartment buildings that don't list online. I'd check along Soi Ratchawithi 7 or 9, some of those old-style apartments go for 5k if you haggle and commit to a year lease.

the catch is most won't have a proper kitchen, just a hotplate and sink in the room. if you really want a separate kitchen area you'll prob need to bump up to 7k or look in areas like Ari or Saphan Khwai where there's more studio options. Din Daeng itself has some cheaper spots but the traffic is brutal getting out.

also check the Thai rental sites like DDproperty or Hipflat, filter by price and look for "หอพัก" which are dorm-style apartments. just be ready to pay 2 months deposit upfront in cash.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
