Unfortunately I after spending a pretty disappointing birthday with him, I am dying for some alone time and want to spend my last three days here to myself. Looking for things I can do / see / eat alone in BKK - specifically this weekend. I still want to make the most out of my experience. For reference, I am a 30 year old Southeast Asian American woman coming from Brooklyn. I've been to Bangkok before but nearly. 10 years ago.

Thanks!

ok so solo bangkok is actually a vibe when you lean into it. if you want something different, hit up the bangkok art & culture centre near siam, it's free and you can just wander the galleries without any pressure to talk. there's a little cafe on the top floor called artifact, grab an iced matcha and sit by the window watching the crowd below, it's meditative in its own way.

for lunch, skip the tourist spots and go to jae koy near the old town, it's a tiny shop doing guay jab (rolled rice noodles in peppery broth) and they serve single bowls for like 50 baht. the lady running it has been there for decades and won't bother u, just nod and eat. bonus is it's a 10 minute walk from wat saket so you can pair it with the sunset climb someone else mentioned.

if you're up for a bit of a mission, take the bts to udom suk and grab a motorbike taxi to the bangpu recreation center. it's a boardwalk over the mangroves, dead quiet in the late afternoon, and if you time it right you'll see the thousands of seagulls come in at dusk. bring a book, sit on one of the benches, it's properly peaceful. grab some grilled squid from the stalls by the entrance on your way back, it's cheap and fresh.

honestly a solo day in bangkok is the best reset. start your morning at borussia cafe near ekkamai, single origin drip coffee and a quiet corner to decompress. then walk over to the sukhumvit 31 market for a bowl of khao tom pla from the old lady vendor there, it's like 60 baht and tastes way better than any fancy place.

for the afternoon, take the bts to saphan taksin and hop on the khlong boat to the flower market, pak khlong talat. it's chaos but in a good way, you can just wander and smell everything, no one bothers you. grab some mango with sticky rice from the stalls near the pier, the one with the yellow sign is my go to.

evening wise, skip khao san road and head to ari for dinner. there's a tiny spot called lay lao that does northern style larb and a single portion is perfect. after, walk down to the little wine bar called viva & co, sit at the counter and read a book. it's chill, no one will chat you up.

if you want actual quiet, book a session at health land on sukhumvit. the traditional thai massage is 2 hours for 550 baht and they don't do small talk. just walk in, pay, and zone out on that mat for a while. way better than the pushy street massage spots.

for food, go to nang loin alley near the old town around dusk. the street food there is mostly locals and the khao man gai guy sets up around 5pm. one plate is 50 baht and you can just sit on the little plastic stool watching the neighborhood wake up for dinner. no one will try to sell you anything or make conversation.

if you want a weird solo activity that actually works, go to the jim thompson house museum. do the guided tour (it's mandatory) but you don't have to talk to anyone, just follow the group and look at the silk and old buildings. the garden out back is a good place to sit on a bench and read for a bit after. it's near the national stadium bts so easy to get to.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
