Weird fortune telling interaction at Emquartier?

An Indian guy approached her asking if she speaks English and proceeded to tell her that she looks happy but she's unhappy inside, that she has bad karma following her, not to eat beef on Tuesdays for better luck, and a lot more bs. My friend tried to sneak a picture because she felt it was a scam, and he forced her to delete it and empty her trash lol. He then told her that he's an Ajarn at Wat Khaek and asked if she would like to sit down and learn more. I got there in time so their interaction ended.

Has anyone experienced this before? How does the scam work?

It's a variation of the "blessing scam" that's been around Siam and Phrom Phong for years. They bank on people feeling too awkward to walk away once the conversation starts, and the Wat Khaek name gives them just enough credibility to seem legit. The real giveaway is that actual monks or ajarns from that temple don't hang out at Emquartier's supermarket entrance looking for tourists. If you ever see them again, just say "mai ow" firmly and keep walking, they won't push it.

yeah this is a known scam around emquartier and centralworld actually. the basic play is they act like a holy man or ajarn to gain trust, then theyll say you have a curse or bad energy and offer to do a "cleansing ritual" for a fee. sometimes theyll even take you to a quiet spot and pressure you for cash or jewelry. the beef on tuesday thing is just random nonsense to sound legit lol. just ignore or walk away if they approach, theyre not actually associated with wat khaek

This is a common hustle around that area, I've seen them near the BTS exit at Phrom Phong too. The trick is they build up this fake spiritual authority with the Wat Khaek name, then push for a "donation" to fix your supposed bad karma. The beef on Tuesday thing is just nonsense they throw in to sound knowledgeable, same with the forced photo deletion. Best thing to do is just say "no thanks" and keep walking, they won't bother you if you don't engage.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
