I have zero experience dating Asians and I am new to Bangkok. Generally speaking what are some common first date ideas? Most likely coffee shop or a bar? Also, it's such a big city- do you meet in the middle? Are you expected to go to their zone for the girls convenience? Would you invite them to your area? Is the man expected to lead every decision and take all initiative no questions asked? Any particular customs I should be aware of. Thanks for any pointers

If you're new to the city, don't overthink the "different cultures" part. Thai women aren't a monolith, and a lot of them have dated foreigners before, so they're used to the whole song and dance. What actually matters more is the time of day. A late afternoon date works better than an evening one here, you beat the worst of the traffic and the heat, and if the vibe's good you can roll it into dinner without it feeling like a marathon.

For the zone thing, let her pick but have a plan B. If she says "up to you" which happens a lot, suggest something near her BTS station but not literally at it, like a small cafe a few stops away that you've scouted on Google Maps. That way you're not stuck in a dead zone if it goes badly, and you can easily hop to a night market or river walk if it goes well.

One custom that catches people off guard: don't be overly complimentary about her appearance right off the bat. It can come across as insincere, since a lot of guys lead with that. Instead, notice something specific, like her choice of coffee or her watch, and comment on that. It reads as more genuine and she'll relax faster. Also, if she brings a friend along for the first meet, don't take it personally. It's a safety thing, just be cool about it and include the friend in small talk, it'll score

You'll get a feel for it fast, but one thing that surprises most guys here is how much the date scene runs on LINE, not texting apps. After a good first meet, she'll expect you to switch over to LINE and keep the chat going there, it's basically the social glue of Bangkok. Don't be thrown off if she's a bit slow to reply at first, that's normal, just match her pace.

For the meeting spot, her zone wins almost every time, but that's not a bad thing. It's a chance to see her side of the city, and if she picks a place she knows, it takes the pressure off you to scout a good spot. Just make sure it's near a BTS stop, a 15 minute walk in this heat will kill the mood before it starts.

On the leading thing, it's less about making every call and more about showing you've got a plan. You can still ask her what she's craving, but have a backup spot ready if she says "up to you", which she probably will. And a small thing that goes a long way: when the bill comes, just put your card down without making a show of it. If she insists on splitting, let her, but don't offer twice.

coffee first is the move, honestly. most thai girls are comfortable with that, it's low pressure and you can bail fast if the vibe's off. try somewhere like Roots in thong lo or a random cafe near bts, not too fancy. bars are fine too but maybe skip the super loud ones for a first meet.

meeting in the middle is polite but honestly most girls expect you to come to their area, especially if they're not super familiar with the bts or mrt routes. that's pretty normal here, so don't overthink it. if they're from bangkok proper they'll usually suggest a spot near their place or work, just go with that.

you don't have to lead every single thing but yeah, initiative is expected. pick a place, set a time, confirm the day before. they'll appreciate the structure, not in a controlling way, just shows you're serious. customs wise, don't be surprised if she's a bit shy or indirect at first, small talk about food, traffic, or her work goes a long way. and don't assume physical touch is automatic, read the room. also, paying is on you for the first date, no question.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
