Where to do a Buddhist meditation retreat? (Bangkok / Phuket area with a 50km radius)

Would like to join a place which is completely simple (no spa or any other luxury involved). Currently im closed to being burned out in my job and life and hope by learning about how to meditate and any other skills would support me to become more peaceful and less anxious.

Thank you for all your support!

for bangkok proper, wat mahathat near the grand palace runs a weekend meditation course in english every month, like 200 baht total including meals and a mat to sleep on. it's not a retreat per se but you can ask to stay longer and they'll usually let you join the daily sessions if space allows. the location is hectic but the temple compound itself is surprisingly calm, and the ajahn there has been teaching vipassana for decades. just show up at 7am on a saturday morning, no booking needed, and bring a sarong if you're a woman

honestly, for what you're describing, skip the Phuket tourist traps and head to Suan Mokkh in Chaiya. It's about 2 hours south of Surat Thani, so a bit of a trek from Bangkok but worth it for the no-frills vibe. They have 10-day silent retreats, but you can prob arrange a shorter stay if you email them ahead. It's basic, like sleeping on a mat in a dorm basic, which sounds exactly what you need right now.

if you want closer to Bangkok, Wat Pa Tam Wua in Mae Hong Son is famous but that's way north. for a local option, check out Wat Tham Sua in Kanchanaburi, it's about 2-3 hours drive from Bangkok and the monks there do short retreats for beginners. the food is simple, the schedule is strict, and there's zero luxury. it's all about sitting with your thoughts and learning the basics of anapanasati (mindfulness of breathing). take a fan if you go in hot season, it gets rough

I'd check out Wat Phra That Hariphunchai in Lamphun, it's not super famous for retreats but the monks there are really open to teaching beginners if you show up with respect and a simple request. You'll be sleeping on a wooden floor and eating rice with veggies, no frills at all, and the temple grounds are old and quiet enough to help you slow down. Just email or call ahead to confirm they've got space for a short stay, since they don't run a formal retreat program like the bigger places.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
