American Chicken Soup?

I unfortunately have COVID, and have been stuck in the room for 5 days now, and I have been GRABbing all my meals (Thai and non-Thai) to keep myself quarantined. I have a longing for some Chicken Soup… I unfortunately have COVID, and have been stuck in the room for 5 days now, and I have been GRABbing all my meals (Thai and non-Thai) to keep myself quarantined. I have a longing for some Chicken Soup, as I am from NY...I know Thailand has a ton of soups, but I thought finding SOMEWHERE making NY/US Chicken Soup? Thanks!

ngl the western spots here wont scratch that exact NY itch, but there's a japanese chain called Tsum Tsum that does a killer corn chicken soup, it's creamy and salty like a diner version but with actual body. they're all over grab, like 150 baht and it comes piping hot in a proper container.

another move, check the foodpanda section for "soups" under the arabic or indian filters, the haleem or shorbat adas places often do a chicken broth that's closer to what u remember than any thai tom yum. get the one with barley if they have it.

for the fever, grab some fresh lime and honey to stir into hot water, that plus the soup is basically ur whole recovery plan. and open the window a crack at night, the room air gets stale and makes the covid head worse. get well.

have u tried checking the deli section at Villa Market? they sell those little packets of campbell's chicken noodle but tbh it's not the same. if ur craving that salty NY diner flavor, there's a place called The Diner on Sukhumvit 22 that does a proper chicken soup with big chunks of carrot and celery, kinda like the ones from a deli counter. they're on grab, just search "chicken soup" and filter by western.

also for the fever, grab some dan muay thai, it's a local herbal drink that's basically

tbh the closest i've found to that NY diner chicken soup is at Foodland, the supermarket chain. their deli counter makes a whole roasted chicken and you can grab the carcass for like 40 baht, throw it in a pot with ginger, garlic, and some instant noodles. it's not fancy but the broth comes out rich and salty, exactly what ur body wants rn. grab delivers the chicken too, just search "roasted chicken foodland".

also if ur up for a twist, order khao soi from Khao Soi Khun Yai, it's northern thai curry noodle soup with chicken. the coconut broth is heavy but the turmeric and lime really cut thru the covid fog, plus the crispy noodles on top are a nice texture change from all the soft stuff.

for hydration, skip the coconut water hype and get pocari sweat from 7-11 delivery, it's the local electrolyte drink and way better for the fever than anything else. and if ur throat hurts, suck on some taro candy from the same spot, the starch coats it better than cough drops. get well soon.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
