On the internet, it says half an hour, but I heard from 2 people it took over an hour or two. Any insight would be swell

honestly it's more like 35 to 40 mins from Phaya Thai to BKK if you catch the express, but the catch is the wait. the city line stops at every station and can drag to 50ish mins easy. the 2 hour stories are prob from people who got stuck in the massive queue at Makkasan during peak hours, or they took the wrong train. i always check the board for the "Airport Rail Link Express" even though it costs a bit more, it skips like 6 stops. also avoid 7-9am and 5-8pm if u can, the platform at Phaya Thai gets packed and you might miss a train or two. honestly for the price and reliability it beats a taxi any day, just budget an extra 20 mins on top of Google's estimate.

Realistically you're looking at 40 to 50 minutes door to door from Phaya Thai if you're already on the platform, but that's the train time. The walk from the BTS to the Airport Link platform at Phaya Thai is longer than people expect, especially with luggage, since you've got to go down through the skywalk and then into the station itself. Budget an extra 10 minutes just for that transfer. The two hour stories usually come from people who tried to take it during Songkran or long weekends when the queue snakes all the way back to the BTS concourse. If you're not in a rush and want a seat, the city line is fine, just get on at Phaya Thai rather than Makkasan because the train's usually emptier by then. Also note the last train leaves around midnight, so if your flight lands late you're stuck with the 50 baht taxi queue instead, which can genuinely take an hour and a half.

The trick is to check the destination board before you commit, they run two services on the same track and it's easy to grab the wrong one if you're not paying attention. The express only runs a few times an hour and it's not always clearly marked, so I've seen tourists hop on thinking it's the city line and end up confused at a station they didn't expect. For what it's worth, I'd rather take the train than the taxi during the day, the expressway tolls and traffic near the airport can turn a 30 minute drive into a 90 minute crawl especially after 3pm. If you're coming from the BTS, the walk from the Siam side through the skywalk to the Airport Link entrance is about 8 minutes, but it's all covered so you won't melt in the heat, just don't try to rush it with a big suitcase because the ramps are gentle but long. One thing nobody's mentioned is the Airport Link has luggage racks at the ends of each car, so you don't have to wrestle your bag in the aisle, but they fill up fast, so board near the front or back of the train if you can.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
