if you're open to a desktop fan instead of standing, the dyson pure cool is dead silent on low settings but it's 12-15k baht which is a lot. more budget-friendly, grab the meiji tower fan at lotus, around 1,800 baht. it's tall and narrow so you can wedge it right in the doorway, and the noise is more of a soft whoosh than blade chop. my colleague uses one for his home office and his zoom calls sound clean

the vornado 660 is worth checking out, it pushes air way further than a normal fan so you can put it in the doorway and it'll actually move the cold air into the other room. you can get them at homepro or central department store for around 3,500 baht. it's not silent but the hum is way less annoying than the hatari blade noise

honestly for video calls the blade noise is the main issue, not the motor hum. check out the mitsubishi electric standing fan, it uses a different blade design that cuts through the air quieter. homepro has them for about 2,800 baht, they're a bit pricier than hatari but the difference in sound is night and day. i use one in my bedroom and my mic doesnt pick it up at all

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
