Since you're heading here next week, I'd point you toward the riverside instead of the usual Sukhumvit circuit. There's a spot called Viva & Aviv on Soi 26, it's a two-in-one Israeli and Latin place, but the real draw is the deck right on the Chao Phraya. You get the ferries and longtails sliding past while a live band plays funk covers, and the mojitos are strong enough that you won't care about the tourist markup.

If you want something that feels more like a local secret, wander into Ari around 8pm and look for a tiny bar called Baht Baht on Soi Ari 2. It's a converted shophouse with maybe six tables, the owner curates the playlist from his own vinyl, think Thai molam mixed with 70s soul, and he'll chat your ear off if you ask about the records. Drinks are simple, just spirits and mixers, but the vibe is unbeatable for a Tuesday.

One thing I'd steer you clear of is the top of Lebua, the Hangover bar. The view is postcard perfect but you're paying 400 baht for a watered-down gin and tonic next to guys in rented suits. Better to grab a Chang at the dock below and watch the same skyline for a tenth of the price.

depends what night you're here tbh. if it's a weekday, hit up sing sing theater on sukhumvit 8, it's decked out like an opium den, super moody with a dj spinning funk and disco, crowds chill but not dead. weekends though that place gets packed with expats, so i'd swap it for the speakeasy at 8 days a week on soi 23, tiny door behind a barber shop, they do proper cocktails and the playlist is all 70s soul, zero phone lights, just people talking and vibing.

also if u want something with a river view without the rooftop price, try the balcony at wanara, it's a hotel bar but locals know it for the cheap mojitos and the barge traffic rolling by. for late night, like after 1am, check out bond club on soi 11, it's a basement with house music and a smoking patio, feels like a nyc dive but with thai street food carts outside. just uber everywhere, bts closes at midnight and the taxis near the bars are a scam sometimes.

honestly depends what vibe you're after. if you want rooftop with actual skyline views, check out Tichuca, the one with the glowing tree, it's touristy but the music's decent and sunset there is unreal. for something more underground, Beetle Bar on Sukhumvit 26 is a hidden gem, tiny place with a killer sound system and mostly locals.

if you're into jazz, Saxophone Pub near Victory Monument is a classic, live bands every night and the crowd is mixed ages, super chill. avoid Khao San unless you want chaos, and skip Soi Cowboy unless that's your thing. dress code's pretty relaxed everywhere but Tichuca gets packed after 9 so go early, like 7ish.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
