Is there a more reliable app for weather and possibly air quality?

The Thai Meteorological Department has its own app called Thai Weather, and it's surprisingly good for radar. The rain radar updates every 15 minutes or so and you can see the actual cells moving across the city, which matters here because Bangkok rain is so localized. It'll be pouring in Silom while Thonglor stays dry.

For air quality I use AirVisual. It pulls from the US Embassy monitor on Wireless Road plus a bunch of local sensors, and the hourly PM2.5 readings track pretty closely with what I see out my window. The free version is enough unless you want forecasts days out.

radarscope is worth the 10 bucks if u actually care about nowcasting. u get the raw doppler from the Thai radar sites and can watch a storm build over the gulf before it even hits the coast, which the free apps smooth over. it looks like a cockpit display so most people bounce off it, but for "will it rain on my soi in 40 mins" nothing beats it. for aqi i just check bangkok's own air4thai site, it has the pcd stations that the embassy sensor misses

Windy is what I use, its more about the map than a forecast though.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
