Where to get Protein snacks etc in Bkk?

You might have some luck at the fitness-specific markets that pop up on weekends. There's one at Lumphini Park on the first Sunday of each month where a few small Thai brands sell direct. I picked up a bag of roasted crickets there from a brand called Cricket Protein, about 100 baht for 50g of protein and they taste like salty nuts. Not for everyone but it's definitely local.

For something less adventurous, the protein pancakes at the D'ark coffee chain near Ekkamai BTS are decent. They use a Thai brand called Pro Pancake that I've never seen in stores, about 100 baht for a stack. The coffee there is average but the pancakes are worth the trip if you're in that area.

The lack of local protein brands here has always seemed like a missed opportunity to me. You'll find a handful of Thai options if you know where to look though. The Fitlab brand at Fitness First shops has some decent whey and plant-based powders that run about 800 baht a bag, which is half what you'd pay for imports. For bars on the go, check the cold case at any Gourmet Market branch. They stock these little Thai-made egg white bites called Albumin that come in three flavors and run about 25 baht each. Not as exciting as Indonesia's selection but it's something.

fwiw theres a few local protein cookie brands floating around now. "Protein Delight" makes decent ones with like 20g protein each, find them at any decent supplement shop or Central World basement. About 50 baht each vs 80-100 for imports

also check out the fresh soy milk stalls at morning markets, they do that thick kind with like 15g protein per cup and it's like 15 baht. not branded obviously but gets the job done

the real hidden gem is actually the grilled chicken breast from street stalls. hit up the ones near office buildings around lunchtime, they sell them by weight for like 60 baht for a decent portion. way cheaper than any protein bar and fresher too

for powders specifically, try the house brand at Fitwhey on Sukhumvit 24. they do a thai-made isolate thats about 700 baht for 1kg. tastes fine with milk, a bit chalky with water but for that price who cares

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
