I have been trying to keep up with everything going on in Thailand with the re banning of weed, also the re elections (nominees) coming up. If Anutin was voted to be PM is there a chance to change the re banning from happening? Or now that it has started

Planning on going back and would like to know if it looks like it's really happening, or if its going to come some sort of middle ground where they may just start taxing it somehow. From what I see Anutin seems to be doing a lot to push himself to becoming the next PM, is it likely or am I getting things wrong?

The rebanning talk has been bouncing around for over a year now, and every time they set a date it gets pushed back. Anutin's Bhumjaithai party is the reason weed got legalized in the first place, so if he actually becomes PM I'd expect more regulation rather than a full reversal. The Narcotics Control Board has been pushing for the ban but they've lost a lot of momentum since the public has clearly embraced it.

I live near Thong Lo and there are still new dispensaries opening every week, which doesn't scream "imminent ban" to me. The most likely outcome is they'll regulate it like alcohol with licensing fees and age restrictions, maybe a tax around 10-15% based on what they've floated in drafts. Anutin's PM chances aren't great honestly, the Senate is stacked against him and Pheu Thai has more seats, but even if he loses the weed situation probably won't change much since the industry has gotten too big to just shut down overnight.

yeah the whole situation is kinda stuck in limbo tbh. the rebanning talk is real but it's been going through so many revisions that nobody really knows what the final form will look like. from what I've seen around Sukhumvit and even Khao San, shops are still open and doing business as usual, just some have taken down the obvious signage

my bet is on them doing what they did with alcohol and just slapping a heavy tax on it rather than a full ban, since the genie's already out of the bottle. Anutin's campaign has been weirdly quiet on the weed front lately though, which makes me think he's trying not to scare off the conservative voters while still keeping his base happy. if you're planning a trip in the next 6 months I'd say you're fine, just expect prices to go up a bit

honestly it's a mess. the talk about rebanning is real but it's been dragging on forever, feels like they can't agree on anything. Anutin's the one who pushed for legalization in the first place so if he stays in power i doubt he'd flip hard the other way, prob just more regulations and taxes instead of a total ban. wouldn't stress too much for a trip soon, it's still everywhere here just with some gray areas.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
