Near On Nut, what is your personal preference for local eating? I mean a / several places where you can eat Thai food on day to day (so access to different type of meals) with local price (50 to 70 THB). I've noticed Lotus and BigC have a food court. There are also some restaurants in the street near by. And one food court in the fresh market next to BigC.

the big c food court is decent but i prefer the one in the fresh market next to it, soi 77 side. more vendors, the som tam stall does 50 thb and the khao moo daeng is solid. lotus on nut is cleaner but pricier, like 60 to 80 for most plates. best bet tbh is the stalls along soi 79/1 in the evening, lots of made to order spots around 50 to 60

I usually just walk through the fresh market next to BigC around lunch and graze, most stalls do single plates for 50 to 60 and you can mix a curry with rice and a boiled egg for cheap. If you want something a bit different, the shophouses on On Nut soi 79 have a couple of Isaan spots doing larb and gai yang for around 60, and they're open later than the food courts.

Honestly the Big C food court gets old fast. try the on nut market soi 81 side in the mornings, there's a khao tom stand and a nam prik stall that does a full set for like 55. for variety during the day i usually hit the shophouse row on soi 77/1, made to order stuff, pad kaprao around 50 to 60 and they dont skimp on teh basil. lotus is fine if you want aircon but your paying for it.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
