Paying the toll for Don Muang Tollway with foreign contactless card?

It seems if you're driving into or out of DMK, you must use Don Muang Tollway, and according to their website, they (should) accept contactless credit cards for paying the toll.

Here's my question: has anyone ever tried to pay the toll with a foreign, as in non-Thai, contactless credit card? Does it work?

Thanks in advance.

tbh you're overthinking it, I've used a foreign contactless card there a few times and it worked fine. just tap it on the machine and it goes through the same as any local card, no weird surcharge or anything. the toll plaza right at the DMK exit is the one you'll hit first, it's like 70 baht for that section so not a big deal if it somehow fails, they'll just wave u to the side and take cash. only thing to watch for is make sure your card doesn't have a foreign transaction fee, some banks hit u with that nonsense

I can confirm foreign contactless cards work fine there. I've used a US-issued Chase card and a UK Monzo card without any issues. The machines are the same ones used at the Expressway tolls around the city, and those handle foreign cards too.

One thing nobody mentioned is that the rental car companies at DMK will sometimes offer you a toll pass for the trip. If you're going all the way to Hua Hin you'll hit the motorway tolls south of Bangkok as well, and those are cash only in some lanes. Might be worth asking the rental desk if they have an Easy Pass you can borrow for the day.

I've used a foreign contactless Visa at the Don Muang Tollway booths a few times without issue. The machines are set up for the standard tap-and-go system, so it's really no different from using it at any other terminal.

One thing to keep in mind is that the toll plaza right by the DMK exit has two lanes for card payments on the left side. Don't get sucked into the cash-only lanes on the right, especially if you're still getting your bearings in the rental car.

If your card does get declined for some reason, the attendants are used to it and will just take cash on the spot. But in my experience, it's been smooth sailing with both Visa and Mastercard contactless from abroad.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
