I've been to three barbers so far in Bangkok and they have all butchered my fade. I just want a decent American-style fade.

Why is it so difficult to find here? I even showed them pictures of what I want and they still give me a sharp line fade. I see that many Thai men have sharp line fades. Maybe that's the style here.

Thanks in advance.

im a bit late but something nobody said yet, ask for a "skin fade" in English and they'll nod and still do the line. whats worked for me is avoiding the word fade entirely and saying i want it "gradual" then pointing at the guard sizes on the clipper. sounds dumb but it clicks.

also the 200 to 300 baht shops near BTS stations mostly do the same cut on every head. i started paying 450 at a place in Ari, soi 2 off Phahon Yothin, run by a guy who cuts a lot of farang. he actually uses a trimmer for the blend instead of going straight to the razor. no lineup unless u ask.

if u got thick hair the humidity thing is real, mine puffs up by the time im at the mo chit bts. tell them to go a guard shorter on the sides than what looks right in the chair, it settles after a week.

Been there man, wasted a year on neighborhood shops around On Nut before figuring it out. What changed things for me was going to a barbershop inside a gym, specifically the one at Virgin Active on Sukhumvit 24. The guys there cut a lot of athletes and expats so they actually understand a gradual fade without the hard line. Around 600 baht, book ahead on Line because weekends are packed.

One thing nobody mentions, the humidity here makes your hair sit different than back home so a fade that looks perfect in the chair can look off by the time u get outside. Tell them to leave a bit more length on top than you think you need.

The line up thing is cultural, not a skill gap. Thai barbers learn at shops where the edge is the whole point, customers come back every 10 days to get it re-sharpened. So when you say "fade" they hear "make it clean" and the clippers go straight to your hairline.

What worked for me is going to a shop that does mostly expat and mixed clientele, not a neighborhood one. There's a spot on Phrom Phong side of Sukhumvit soi 33, second floor above a massage place, guy named Bank. He uses a 0.5 guard and blends with scissors, actually takes his time. 500 baht but he gets the American look.

Also bring a photo of the BACK of the head, not just the side profile. That's what most guys forget and it's where the fade lives or dies.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
