How much does a tattoo cost in Thailand?

Looking to get a new tattoo in Thailand wondering what the cost are like. Simple design on firearm 8 inch long buy about 4 nice wide.. Tattoo pricing here is all over the place depending on the studio and the artist's reputation. A simple forearm piece, 8 by 4 inches, you're probably looking at 3,000 to 8,000 baht at a decent street-level shop in Bangkok, but if you go to a well-known artist in a trendy area like Ari or Thonglor, expect to pay 15,000 baht and up. The hourly rate at reputable places runs around 2,500 to 5,000 baht, and most charge by the piece for something that size. I'd skip the tourist-trap spots near Khao San Road, the ink quality is hit or miss, and instead check out studios like All Day Tattoo or Bangkok Ink, they're clean and have solid portfolios online. Also, make sure the shop uses single-use needles and fresh ink caps, that's non-negotiable regardless of price.

honestly the biggest cost factor is whether the artist specializes in the style u want. a simple black outline piece that size? 4k to 6k baht at a solid shop like never grow old in sukhumvit soi 23. but if u want fine line or watercolor, that's a different price bracket, like 10k+ easy cause the artists who do that well are in demand.

also check if they're charging by the piece or by the hour. some spots quote u a flat rate that sounds cheap then hit u with a "design fee" later. ask upfront if the stencil and placement are included. and for an 8x4 on the forearm, plan on 2 to 3 hours, so if they say it's a 30 minute job, they're rushing it or it's a walk-in tourist trap.

one thing nobody mentioned, if u're staying in a hotel, ask the front desk if they have a recommended shop. they usually know which places the expats use and which ones the tuk tuk drivers get commission from. that saved me from a bad experience once.

yeah pricing really depends on where u go. if u want something decent without breaking the bank, check out the street artists around Chatuchak market on weekends, they do solid work for like 2,500 to 4,000 baht for that size. just make sure u see their healed work on instagram first, not just the fresh stuff. another option is getting it done in Chiang Mai if u're heading north, studios there are cheaper and the vibe is more relaxed, like 20% less than Bangkok for the same quality.

for an 8x4 inch piece, expect around 3 hours at least, so if they quote u under 1,500 baht, walk away, that's a red flag for cheap ink or bad hygiene. also tip 10% if u're happy, it's normal here but not expected. and don't forget to check if they include the design in the price, some places charge extra for custom art, that can add 500 to 1,000 baht on top.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
