Where would you rent in Bangkok with a budget of 100k per month?

A specific building? An area? A house? A condo? A hotel? Anything you would avoid?

i'd pick something in ari honestly, it's a different pace from sukhumvit and you get more bang for your buck. the ari hills condo building near the bts has 2br units around 85-95k with decent balconies and a pool that's actually swimmable, plus the soi ari area has all those indie cafes and the small food market that opens at night. you're also closer to don muang airport if you travel a lot for work.

for a house i'd check out the moo baan off soi phaholyothin 7, there's some older townhouses with proper yards for 70-90k that the expats overlook because they're obsessed with sukhumvit. you can walk to the bts in 10 minutes and the local market on soi 5 has khao man gai for 50 baht that's better than anything you'll find in thong lo. just make sure the AC units are recent, those old houses eat electricity in april

skip anything near victory monument, the traffic there is a special kind of hell and the bts station is always packed with students. also avoid the new condos along rama 9 that advertise themselves as "the new cbd" because they're not, it's just office towers and a mall with nothing interesting around after 8pm

honestly i'd go for a place in sathorn or silom if you want a different vibe from the usual sukhumvit scene. the sathorn residences building near chong nonsi bts has units with proper floor plans and actual views for around 90-100k, and you're right next to lumphini park for running or just escaping the city noise. it's quieter at night than thong lo but still has good bars and restaurants within walking distance.

for a house i'd look at the pridi banomyong area off suk soi 71, there's some newer townhouse developments with small gardens and parking for 80-95k. you get more space and a bit of privacy but you're still close to phra khanong bts and all the street food. traffic is bad everywhere in bangkok so don't let that scare you off a good spot.

avoid the riverfront condos near saphan taksin unless you really love ferries and humidity, the bts gets packed and those buildings are old with high maintenance fees that eat into your budget. also skip anything in huai khwang, it's just not worth the commute even if the rent is cheaper.

with 100k you could get a solid 2br in one of the newer phrom phong towers like the emquartier residences or the landmark. the walk to emsphere and benjakitti park is hard to beat, plus you have all the japanese restaurants on soi 33/1 within 5 minutes. just check the common area maintenance fees before you sign, some of those trophy buildings charge 80-100 baht per sqm and it adds up quick.

if you want something more lowrise and quiet, try the townhouses off sukhumvit 31 near the american school. those are mostly 3 stories with a small garden and parking, around 80-90k, and you can walk to both phrom phong and asoke bts. the street food on soi 31 at night is some of the best in the city imo.

avoid the new towers right on ratchada near the cultural centre, they look flashy but the traffic is soul-crushing and the nearest bts is a 15 minute walk through a market. also skip anything in the old parts of silom where the buildings are pre-2000, the plumbing and electrical will drive you nuts

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Their som tam is prob the most authentic I've found in the city, and the grilled chicken is always on point. Anyone else go here?

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
