There was no other traffic nor pedestrians around so for the old man coming down the road to turn onto Sukhumvit, I was very visible walking across the road. He did not slow down until the very last second and I was able to catch myself with both hands on his bonnet and avoid getting knocked off my feet, but this is not the first time that this has happened (just the worst).

Do zebra crossings actually mean anything? Every time I have a close call I want to flip out and bash their car but I've been warned that doing that to the wrong person would be a nice way to get myself stabbed. Obviously it won't matter who was in the "right" if I get killed by a driver but if I wait around for someone to stop and let me cross I'll be waiting a long time...

Zebra crossings technically mean something under Thai traffic law, but enforcement is practically nonexistent. I've seen cops sit right there while cars blow through crossings without a second glance. The reality is that drivers here treat them as speed bumps at best, and you're right that waiting for someone to stop will leave you standing there all day. Your best bet is to cross with a group of Thais if possible, or make eye contact and start walking slowly with a hand out, forcing them to decide whether to hit you or stop.

yeah welcom to bangkok. zebra crossings here are just suggestions at best, drivers treat em like optional decoration. u survived this time but dont count on it next time. honestly just assume no one will stop and cross when there's a gap in traffic like everyone else does. getting mad

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
