I have $40K in cash and $300K in liquid investments. I'm 44. Can I last in Bangkok? For how long?

Not sure how much I can work in Thailand. I can possibly work remote, but not certain my job will allow it. If I can work remote, I should be just fine. If I cannot, am I foolish to think about moving… Not sure how much I can work in Thailand. I can possibly work remote, but not certain my job will allow it. If I can work remote, I should be just fine. If I cannot, am I foolish to think about moving to Bangkok and leaving my job behind?

ngl the responses so far are solid on numbers but missing the lifestyle trap. a lot of guys come here with that 340k and think they're set because beer is $2 and pad thai is $1.50, but they forget that living in bangkok long term changes your habits. you'll prob start wanting a massage twice a week, maybe a weekend trip to koh samet, a nicer gym membership, a dating life if you're single. that stuff adds up faster than you'd think. i know a guy who burned through $50k in 18 months just on weekends in pattaya and soi cowboy

the remote work question is the real decider though. if you can keep that job, you're golden. $300k invested earning 5-7% is like $15-20k a year passive, plus your salary covers living. that's a cushion that lets you actually enjoy bangkok instead of counting baht. but if you quit and come here unemployed, you're just delaying the inevitable by 3-4 years and making yourself unemployable back home with a resume gap

one thing nobody mentioned - chiang mai is a cheaper alternative if bangkok rent scares you. you can get a decent one bedroom there for $200-300 a month and the digital nomad scene is huge. if your remote job works out, you could base yourself there for a year, keep your bangkok condo money in savings, and

honestly the numbers work but the real problem is your age and visa options. at 44 you're in this weird gap where you're too young for retirement visa and too old to easily find employer sponsorship here unless you've got a very specific skill set. the elite visa is your best bet if you can swing it, but that's 15k minimum which eats into your cash buffer fast

i'd look at it this way - if you can work remote even part time, you're prob fine for 5-6 years living decently in on nut or bang na area. rent is maybe 300-400 usd for a decent studio there, food 10-15 usd a day if you mix street food and markets. but if you're fully unemployed and living off savings, you're looking at maybe 2-3 years before that 340k starts feeling real tight, especially if you need to replace a laptop or deal with any medical stuff

the one thing nobody mentioned is thai bank account requirements for visa extensions. you need to show 800k baht (about 22k usd) parked in a thai bank for 3 months before applying for certain visas, and that money is locked up. that's 22k you cant touch for living expenses which changes your math significantly

340k total is tight for a permanent move at 44, tbh. a one year lease on a decent condo in sukhumvit will run you 6-8k usd upfront with deposit and fees, then you're looking at maybe 12-15k usd a year on rent alone if you want a pool and gym. food and transport is cheap, but a serious medical issue could wipe you out fast, especially without local coverage. if you can't work remote, you'd burn through that in about 3-4 years living modestly, maybe 5 if you stay out of thong lo and stick to street food.

the bigger issue is visa stability at 44. you can't get a retirement visa until 50, and the elite visa costs 15-20k usd upfront which eats into your cash. without a work permit or a job that sponsors you, you're on tourist visas and border runs, which is exhausting and gets riskier as thai immigration tightens up. if you can work remote, you could stretch it to maybe 6-7 years even with the elite visa cost, but leaving your job with no backup plan here is a gamble id only take if you've got a family safety net or a plan b to go back.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
