Are there other apps that I can check? Thank you.

The biggest gap I've noticed is on the short trips, not the long ones. Google Maps will say 12 minutes for a 3km hop across Silom or Thonglor, but you'll be crawling for 20 because it misses the motorbike lane blockages or the songtaew stopping every 50 meters. For those, I just use the traffic layer and mentally double the time if it's orange.

If you want a second opinion that's not Waze, try the Moovit app. It's clunky but its bus and van ETAs come from the actual GPS on the vehicles, so it's more honest about the jams that Google's algorithm smooths over. For driving, I'd rather trust the live congestion dots on the map than the number it gives me.

One thing nobody mentions: the time displayed is often the fastest legal route, not the one you'll actually take. Google assumes you'll nail every green light and merge perfectly. I always add 15% on top for the inevitable slow start at the lights on Ratchadaphisek. And if it's raining, just don't trust any ETA, the underpasses flood and everything grinds to a halt.

fwiw the times are fine for planning but i've noticed theyre way off on weekends. the app uses weekday traffic data so saturday afternoon it'll say 20 mins and it's really 35 cause everyone's heading to the malls. also the river crossings are the worst, google never accounts for the bridge backup properly.

if u want something different try the grab app even if ur not booking, just put in the destination and look at the fare estimate, the time it shows there is usually closer cause it's based on actual driver trips not just historical averages. also the b

Google Maps is usually within 5-10 minutes for normal trips, but it struggles with the tollways and the sudden rain squalls that clog up arterial roads like Rama IV or Lat Phrao. The ETA is calculated from historical data, so a random accident or a flooded underpass can throw it off completely.

For a different angle, I'd suggest checking the Bangkok Transit Authority's own app for buses if you're not driving, since it tracks the live GPS on the actual vehicles, which Google doesn't always reflect. Also, the MRT and BTS apps are dead accurate if you're rail-bound, obviously.

One trick I use is to set the departure time to 15 minutes later than when I actually plan to leave, just to build in the buffer. And if you're going to Suvarnabhumi, always check the airport's own traffic feed, the expressway and the ground road can differ by half an hour on a bad day.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
