Hi folks,

Got my mum coming over, we'll be having Thai food for lunch and dinner but can't quite convince her that khao man gai or red pork and rice is the best way to start the day.

Any recommendations for bread brands from Supermarkets? It can be Tops, Villa, Big C etc. Anything but Farmhouse!

The S&P is a solid bet, but if you want something closer to a proper European loaf, the Viking bakery bread in the freezer section at Villa is worth a look. It's a Danish brand, comes par-baked so you just pop it in the oven for ten minutes, and the texture is way better than anything sitting on the shelf. Just keep in mind Villa's freezer aisle can be a bit of a treasure hunt, I've found it tucked behind the frozen pizzas at the Sukhumvit 15 branch.

if she wants proper toast texture, grab the Japanese shokupan from Tops near the Phrom Phong BTS, that Hokkaido brand loaf stays soft for days. there's also a decent ciabatta at Villa's Sukhumvit 33 branch that works for a quick sandwich, comes frozen but thaws fine. Farmhouse is trash yeah, but honestly the supermarket bakery bread here is pretty limited for western style breakfast, u might be better off hitting a place like Le Pain Quotidien or a local bakery for a proper loaf

honestly just grab the S&P whole wheat loaf from Tops, its the most consistent one i've found and doesnt turn into a brick by day two. villa has their in-house sourdough that's decent too if ur near Thong Lo, but it sells out fast by noon. skip the bakery aisle at Big C entirely, its all sweetened garbage even the "healthy" ones

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
