I opened a FCB account in GBP about 3 years ago now i need to tranfer my GBP to THB Account

Is there any tax liability if i tranfer money to my THB account?

Sounds crazy but i believe the FCD account although in GBP is held in Thailand is this correect ?

If there is TAX would it be better to do it now before jan 2025

Any advice would be great Thanks

fcd account is a thai account, just in gbp. the tax bit is about exchange rate gains. if gbp is up since you deposited, that difference could be taxable income if you convert. but honestly, moving between your own accounts at the same bank rarely triggers anything. the revenue department looks at money coming in from overseas, not internal shuffles. if you're still worried, keep a record of the original deposit amount and exchange rate when you opened it. that way if they ask, you can show no real gain happened. doing it now vs jan 2025 probably won't matter much for this case, but if you want peace of mind, just get it done this week at your nearest bangkok bank branch on sukhumvit road. no need for a tax advisor unless you're moving millions

the FCD account is a thai bank account just denominated in gbp so yes it's held locally, the bank reports it to the revenue department as a foreign asset. for tax, the concern is if the gbp has appreciated against the baht since you deposited it, that theoretical gain could be considered assessable income if you convert it now. but honestly, moving money between your own accounts is rarely scrutinized, the tax folks focus on new inbound transfers from abroad.

if you're worried about the rumored 2025 rule changes, doing it now is probably the safer bet since the current rules are more settled. but the actual enforcement is minimal for this kind of thing, i've seen plenty of expats move funds between their own accounts without issue. maybe check with a local tax advisor like at BDO or Grant Thornton in bangkok, they know the specific triggers for assessment here.

honestly you're overthinking this a bit. the FCD is just a regular thai bank account that happens to hold foreign currency, so moving it to your THB account is literally just an internal transfer at the same bank. no new money is entering thailand from overseas, the revenue department sees this as you moving funds between your own accounts.

the real tax trigger would be if the exchange rate gain is significant enough to catch their attention, but for most people converting a few thousand GBP the difference is negligible. i've done this exact transfer at the bangkok bank main branch on silom road and the teller didn't even blink. if you want to be extra safe, just do it before the new year when the rumor mill says things might tighten up, but i doubt anything changes for internal transfers like this.

one thing nobody mentioned is that you can also just withdraw in GBP at the counter and then deposit it as THB if you want to keep it off the electronic records entirely, but that's probably unnecessary unless you're moving serious money.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
