Quiet bars in Asoke?

if you're ok walking a bit further, soi 23 has a couple of tiny spots the tourists dont bother with. there's a little wine bar near the villa market end, maybe 6 tables, does glass pours for like 150 baht and nobody yells over music. i only went once on a trip last year but it was exactly the solo quiet drink vibe you're after. dont expect fancy, it's kinda plain inside but thats teh point

honestly asoke is a nightmare for quiet but there are a few spots tucked away. try the rooftop at the centre point hotel on soi 10, it's called red sky alt or something similar - cheap beer and a decent view without the loud music. another one is find the locker room on sukhumvit 21, it's a tiny whisky bar with like 8 seats, super lowkey and the guy who runs it is chill.

soi 14 has a couple of tiny spots in the alleys behind the exchange tower that are dead quiet on weeknights, one is a little sake place with like 6 seats and no sign in english, just a lantern. beers are cheap & the owner wont rush u even if ur alone for hours

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
