Hi everyone!

I'm from Turkey, but I'm originally Indonesian, moving to Bangkok for an internship. My office is in Phra Nakhon area, and I'm currently looking for a place to stay. I'm looking for advice and some questions to ask, I hope you guys can help me with it :)

I see apartment rent varied soooo widely, going from 3k to 10k (when the apt themselves don't look that different). My salary internship doesn't pay that much, so I wanna keep rent low but still get a decent place (a nice middle ground) my maximum budget is 7000 (if it's worth it), but really wanna try to put it around 3k to 5k. Is it reasonable? I'm moving for 5 months, but I might extend to 6 months since the rent usually cheaper.

I like to walk to the office, so I wanna get a place that's close. I'm super extroverted, I like crowd and noise, was thinking of living in Khao San Road, I also love Chinatown area (is it walkable to the UN office?). I also like Asok and Silom but I'm not sure if it's walkable to the office (?).

I found several place in Pinklao, how is it to live there? I've never been to the west side of Bangkok honestly.

Also I see landlord set their own utility fee and I'm paying to them instead. What is the normal price for electricity per Kwh, water bill, and internet bill? In Turkey, I cannot use foreign-bought phone and my IMEI will get blocked unless I pay some tax, is it a thing too in Thailand? is there anything else that I need to know?

Thank you! I'm really excited to move :D

yeah the 3-5k range in phra nakhon gets you a fan room with shared bathroom, but check out places along ram buttri or soi rambuttri just off khao san. i've seen studios there for 5-6k with AC and your own bathroom, tiny but walkable to the UN office in like 15 mins. chinatown is a 20-25 min walk from the UN office, doable but not great in the heat, yaocharad road at night is worth the sweat though

for utilities, 7 baht per kwh is the standard markup, anything above 8 is them ripping you off. water is usually 20-25 baht per unit. get a 7-day ais sim at 7-eleven first, then switch to a monthly plan at their shop for like 400 baht with 30gb, no contract needed

pinklao is fine for cheap food and quiet living but crossing the phra pin klao bridge on foot every day would be miserable, it's loud and dusty. stick to the banglamphu side if you want to walk

honestly the 3-5k budget is tight but not impossible in Phra Nakhon if you're ok with a fan room and shared bathroom. I've seen some old shophouse conversions near Banglamphu that go for 4-5k and you can walk to Khao San in 10 mins. just check if the room has a window facing outside, not an internal hallway

for utilities, the standard rate landlords charge is 7-8 baht per unit for electricity (government rate is like 4 baht but they always markup). water is usually 20-30 baht per unit. internet you can get an AIS or True 5G pocket wifi for like 400 baht a month, don't let them lock you into a year contract

IMEI blocking isn't a thing here, you can use any foreign phone fine. just get a tourist SIM at 7-Eleven when you land, 300 baht for 30 days with enough data. the only thing is your phone might not have the Thai 4G/5G bands perfectly but it'll still work

Pinklao is fine for living but walking to Phra Nakhon everyday would be like 45 mins in the heat. the bridge over the river is doable on foot but not fun. better to stick to the east side of the river if walking is your priority

Khao San itself is loud until 3am every night

3k-5k in phra nakhon is doable but you're looking at a fan room with a squat toilet and cold water only, usually in a wooden shophouse. i stayed in a place on soi samsen for 4k last year, tiny but i could hear the temple bells from wat bowon, which was nice. for 5-6k you start getting AC and your own bathroom, check along soi rambuttri or the small lanes near khao san police box

walking from chinatown to the UN office is about 20 mins but you'll be drenched by the time you arrive, the heat off the asphalt is brutal. asok and silom are not walkable at all, that's like an hour plus a ferry or bus

on utilities, some landlords in phra nakhon will try to charge 10 baht per kwh, just say no and walk. also ask if the room has a separate meter you can read, some places just guess your usage. for your phone, no imei block here, just pop in a sim from ais or true, they have 30-day plans for like 400 baht at any 7-eleven

pinklao is cheaper and has better food markets but that bridge walk every morning will kill your motivation, the traffic noise alone is demoralizing. stick to banglamphu if you want to walk

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
