Decent "Thai only" areas to live around/above Lat Prao?

I've lived a few stops away from central Bangkok for far too long. I want to try living in a cheaper, more "authentic" thai only area.

Any areas or condos to recommend?

If you want authentic without being too far out, look around the stretch between Lat Phrao and Phahon Yothin soi's. The area behind Major Ratchayothin has a bunch of older moo baan and low-rise condos where you'll mostly hear Thai spoken in the lift. I've got a friend who rents a 35sqm studio at Lumpini Park Ratchayothin for 7k a month, and it's dead quiet at night with a proper local market two soi's over. Just check the flood history on any ground floor unit there, that pocket used to get water during heavy rain a few years back.

try looking around the area near the lat phrao mrt station but on the soi's heading toward nawamin. there's a bunch of older condo buildings like the jasmine residence where studios go for 5-6k and you'll get more local vibe than the bts side. i lived there for a bit and the street food on soi lat phrao 71 is solid, especially the boat noodles at the junction. just know the traffic on lat phrao road is brutal during rush hour so a motorbike is kinda necessary

a bit further out but the area around bang khen market is worth a look, tons of older wooden houses and low rise apartments tucked away in the sois. i rented a place on soi phahon yothin 48 for like 4k a month, mostly thai families and a few uni students around. the local market there has cheap eats all day and you can hop on the bts at saphan mai if you really need to go central, but honestly youll prob just end up staying local most days

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
