ngl the thing that'll hit u most is how many malls got built or redone. IconSiam is old news now, but EmSphere just opened near Phrom Phong and it's a whole different vibe, more local food courts and indie shops than the usual luxury sprawl. if u're into nightlife, the rooftop scene exploded, check out Tichuca if u want the tiktok waterfall thing, but the real hidden gem is the bar at the top of the SO/ Bangkok hotel, less crowded and the view over Lumpini is killer.

also the canal boats got a facelift, the ones on Khlong Saen Saep are still chaotic but they added more stops and cleaner piers, so u can actually use em to hop from Pratunam to Ramkhamhaeng without dying of heat. oh and grab a bike, they finally made the path around Benjakitti Park fully connected and it's genuinely nice for a morning ride now, way better than the old dusty loop.

Yeah the Chinatown scene is way different now, Yaowarat got pedestrianized on weekends so it's actually walkable instead of fighting tuk tuks the whole time. Also if you remember the old dusty Chatuchak vibe, they cleaned up a bunch of the alleys and added proper signage, but the real gem is the new community mall near there called Chang Chui, it's got that whole upcycled plane thing going on and feels nothing like the Bangkok you left.

The Skytrain extensions are the headline, but the quieter shift is how much more walkable certain neighborhoods got. Thonglor and Ekkamai now have proper pavements in stretches, which sounds minor but changes everything when you're hopping between bars. Also, grab delivery culture has exploded, so the old "walk to the soi vendor" rhythm is different now.

For something new, check out the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre again, they redid the top floors and the rotating exhibits are genuinely solid now. If you liked the vintage markets before, the train night market at Srinakarin is still alive but there's a newer one called the Bangkok Farmers Market near Benjasiri Park on weekends, more local crafts and food stalls than the touristy stuff. One heads up, the Chao Phraya tourist boats got pricier and more crowded, so the MRT Sanam Chai station is your friend for getting to the old town area without the river chaos.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
