In Japan the 7/11 had great hot food snacks. Here the hot food displays are always empty - what gives?

The hot food cases at Thai 7-Elevens are usually empty because they cook in small batches and sell out fast, especially around meal times. You'll have better luck hitting one near a BTS station or office area around 7-8am for the breakfast stuff, or 11am-1pm for lunch. The real move here is to grab the toasties or the microwaveable rice-and-curry combos instead, they're always stocked and actually hit the spot. Also, the 7-Eleven in Thailand is basically a different beast from Japan's, way more focus on drinks, snacks, and the famous chang (the sausages on the roller grill).

timing and restock cycles are a big part of it, sure, but the real kicker is the heat, the Thai 7-Eleven hot cases are just not built for the humidity. food sits out, gets soggy, loses appeal fast, so they'd rather keep it empty than serve sad lukewarm stuff. my tip is to check the ones inside malls or near hospitals, those run a tighter schedule and you'll catch fresh batches around 10am and 4pm. also, skip the hot box entirely and grab the pre-packed grilled chicken with sticky rice near the counter, it's always cold but ten times better than anything they heat up.

honestly the empty cases are just how it works here, the staff restock like 3 times a day and it's gone in 20 mins. if u really want hot food, look for the ones with a seating area, those usually keep a fryer going with the fried chicken and spring rolls. also the toasties are slept on, but my actual move is the microwave pad thai or the khao mun gai, they're way better than anything in the hot box anyway.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
