Hey, I run a technology marketing business.

My girlfriend and I are eyeing up a few bases to permanently move to in Asia.

We love fitness - and Bangkok's nice apartments and gyms place it high on our list.

We want to explore Asia with 1-2 week trips away too.

She is deeply attached to her cat.

Can we rent nice condos that allow cats?

Are there good cat-care options for our trips?

Maybe someone who visits to feed and entertain her once a day?

I can't imagine we're the only people who have considered moving to BKK with a cat?

Cheers!

Pet friendly condos are genuinely common now, but there's a catch with the juristic office rules that's already been covered. What I'd add is to look at the building's pet policy before you even view the unit, most agents can email it over. Some towers cap weight at 10kg or require a pet interview, which sounds ridiculous but it's real for a few places in Phrom Phong.

For the trips, I'd actually recommend trying a mix of both sitters and boarding. The Facebook groups people mentioned are solid, but there's also an app called PetBacker where you can filter for sitters who've done cat visits specifically. A 30 minute play session runs about 400 baht and you can book it while you're abroad. For longer getaways, the cat hotel near Rama 9 with the live cams is worth the extra cash, your girlfriend will probably check it more than her own travel photos.

One thing nobody's brought up is the vet paperwork for future trips within Asia. If you're planning 1-2 week getaways, you'll need to sort out the export and import documents each time you bring the cat back into Thailand. It's not hard, but it takes about a week of planning. The Thonglor Pet Hospital mentioned earlier can handle it all, just give them a heads up before you book flights.

On the fitness side, don't sleep on the public pools. A few of the nicer condo towers have

you'll be fine, the cat thing is honestly solved by picking the right building. but here's a tip nobody mentioned: ask about the noise insulation. some pet friendly towers in thong lor have thin walls and the cat will hear every motorbike, which makes them anxious. look for double glazed windows, like at the newer marriott residences or park origin thong lor.

for the trips, don't overlook the option of having a friend from the expat fb groups stay at your place. some people do house swaps or paid sits where they water plants, watch the cat, and keep the place lived in. it's like 500 baht a day and the cat gets way more attention than a 30 min visit. just vet them properly, meet for coffee first.

vet wise, thonglor pet hospital is great but also check out the 24hr emergency place at kluaynamthai, that's where you go at 3am when the cat eats something stupid. also get a microchip registered to your thai address, it makes re-entry paperwork way easier when you travel.

fitness wise, if you're near ekkamai, try the climbing gym at rock domain, it's air conditioned and a great break from running in the heat. and for the gf, there's a cat cafe in ari called caturday that's actually good for socializing your cat if you want to ease her into the move.

the pet thing is less about the building and more about the juristic office, like someone said. but also check the lease itself, some landlords will verbally say yes then add a no pet clause in the contract. get it in writing before you pay any deposit. i've seen people get burned on that.

for trips, besides sitters, there's a place called cat playground on rama 9, it's a cat hotel with actual climbing walls and stuff. around 700 baht a night but your gf can watch them on a live cam, which honestly helps more than any photo update. also, some sitters on the fb groups do "cat visits" where they just come play for 30 min, not just feed, so ask for that specifically.

one thing nobody mentioned is the air quality during burning season, feb to april. if the cat has any respiratory issues, get an air purifier for the bedroom. also, most condos with pets require a pet deposit, usually one month rent, and they'll keep it if the cat scratches the door frame. so bring a scratching post and trim those claws.

for fitness, check out the outdoor calisthenics area at lumpini park, it's free and open 24/7. plus there's a rooftop gym at the banyan tree that's pricey but has a view that'll make ur workouts feel less awful. though tbh, the condo gyms here are usually better than most commercial ones

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
