Hey guys :D

In August me and my husband will stay in Bangkok for a month, and since the last few times we went there we didn't really take anything home, i am now thinking what could something be that is maybe way cheaper compared to Europe or not even available here to take home with us?

We already planned to go shopping for clothes in Central World and i also want to go to Mega Plaza and MBK to maybe get some cheap old Gameboy or something, but do you guys have any ideas for interesting collectibles?

honestly the best thing to bring back from bangkok is thai spices and curry pastes from the actual markets, not the tourist shops. go to khlong toei market or or tor kor and grab packs of dried prik kee noo (those tiny red bird chilis), whole star anise, and fresh turmeric - they cost like 20-30 baht each and you can't get that quality in germany for under 5 euros a pack. the curry pastes from mae ploy or mae sri brands are way cheaper too, like 25 baht for a big tub that costs 4 euros at home.

for something weird and collectible, hit up the amulet market near wat phra kaew. it's a whole maze of stalls selling tiny buddha amulets and vintage thai coins from the 1800s. some of the coins are legit old and only cost 100-200 baht, they make cool conversation pieces. just don't buy the amulets if you don't know what you're doing, there's a lot of fakes and the real ones have specific meanings that might not vibe with your beliefs.

also grab a couple bottles of ya dom from any pharmacy, it's that strong herbal inhaler stuff. like 15 baht each and it's honestly better than any headache medicine for long flights or hangovers. can't find it anywhere in germany.

ngl the dried mango from Siam Paragon's gourmet market is way better than the tourist pack stuff. the ones covered in white sugar coating are a scam, get the chewy sour ones instead.

for collectibles, check out the antique shops on Charoen Krung road near River City. there's a guy on the second floor of the old Siam Square arcade who restores vintage Thai comics and old postcards. he has original Thai movie posters from the 70s for like 500 baht, way cheaper than the reproductions they sell at Chatuchak.

also grab a few bottles of the local fish sauce from the wet market near Klong Toey. the brand in the green bottle with the rooster on it costs 30 baht there but goes for 8 euros at the Asia shop in Berlin. just wrap them in bubble wrap and put them in your checked luggage.

If you're into kitchen stuff, grab some granite mortar and pestles from any local market. They're heavy to carry but cost about 200-300 baht, while a similar quality one in Germany would easily be 30-40 euros. Also pick up a few packs of Mama Tom Yum instant noodles, the ones in the orange packets taste way different from what you find in Asian supermarkets back home. For collectibles, Chatuchak market on weekends has a whole section of vintage Thai movie posters and old lottery tickets that make cheap, flat souvenirs.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
