I got a new passport and now I need to get my Thai visa (non-immigrant) transferred into the new passport. Do I need to go way up to immigration or can I do that somewhere downtown? Thanks

fwiw you can also do this at the immigration office at IT Square Lak Si, not just chaeng wattana. same process, same forms, but way less busy in my experience. the MRT to lak si station drops you right there, you walk through the IT mall and it's on the 3rd floor. took me 45 mins total on a tuesday morning, no queue at all

honestly the MRT to lak si then a taxi is the easiest way out there. if you're near bts you can also take the mo chit bus but it's a pain. just make sure to copy the visa page and the new passport bio page before you go, they'll need both and the photocopy shop inside is always packed

chaeng wattana is the only place for that, yeah. but if you're trying to avoid the full day mission, some people use a visa agent to do the legwork for you. costs maybe 1000-1500 baht but you just drop your passports off at their office near asok or silom and pick them up a few days later. i've done it both ways and honestly the agent route saved me a headache, especially if you don't want to deal with the 5am alarm to get that queue ticket

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
