There's actually a spot that most tourists miss. Rongsi Pochana on Maha Rat Road is a Muslim-owned restaurant that's been around for decades, about a 5 minute walk from Wat Pho. They don't have a direct Wat Arun view from inside, but you can order takeaway and sit on the river wall nearby where the view is completely unobstructed. Their massaman curry and khao mok gai are solid, around 80-100 baht per dish.

If you're willing to hop on a ferry for 5 minutes, head to Khlong San district and try Khao Kaeng Rongsi. It's a halal Thai-Muslim curry shop with a small balcony that looks right at Wat Arun across the river. The owner's family has been running it for three generations, and they do a mean gaeng som with fried fish. Probably the closest you'll get to a proper halal restaurant with the actual view.

honestly this is a tough combo to find in Bangkok since most riverside spots aren't halal certified. but i know a few places that work if you're flexible on the "certified" part

try The Deck by Arun Residence on Soi Wat Arun - it's not halal certified but they have seafood and veggie options and the view is literally right across the river from Wat Arun. imo it's the best direct view you'll get without being in a hotel. another option is Sala Rattanakosin, same street, they do have some halal-friendly dishes if you ask and their rooftop is great at sunset

if you want something more casual, there's a small halal food stall near Tha Tien pier that sells roti and tea, no real cafe vibe but you can sit on the pier steps and watch the wat from across the water. costs like 30 baht

for a proper halal cafe with a view, you might need to go a bit further - check out The Bloom Cafe near Phra Sumen Fort, it's not Wat Arun but has a nice canal view and is fully halal. about a 15 min walk from the Grand Palace area

The halal cafe scene near Wat Arun is pretty sparse, but there's a workaround that locals use. Head to the riverside walkway between Wat Pho and Tha Tien pier around sunset, you'll find a few Muslim street vendors selling grilled satay and sticky rice. Grab a portion for 40 baht and walk to the end of the pier, the view of Wat Arun lighting up is unbeatable from there.

If you want a seated option, take the cross-river ferry (4 baht) to Wat Arun itself. Right at the ferry landing on the Thonburi side, there's a small Muslim-run shop called Roti Mataba that does fresh roti with curry. Their upstairs seating has a partial view of the temple, though it's more of a casual snack spot than a proper cafe.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
