Best Place to learn Thai?

I have little to no Thai ability but really want to learn. I am 50, can either get retirement visa or the new digital nomad visa. I am currently picking up a tiny bit of Thai from youtube etc.

Ideally looking for in person classes. BK or Chiang Mai perhaps?

Duke has been mentioned a few times here but lots of posts are older. What are the best language schools in Thailand?

if you're considering chiang mai too, i'd look at thai language school near the old city. they do a lot of one-on-one which is nice for picking up the tones without the class pressure. the teachers are used to retirees and digital nomads so they adjust the speed. also cheaper than bangkok, like 300 baht an hour for private lessons. the school has a garden you can sit in before class which is chill

yeah Duke is still around but honestly they rush through stuff way too fast for most people. if you're in Bangkok check out Union Language School near Phra Khanong, they do way smaller classes and actually focus on conversation rather than just drilling tones all day. the teachers there are older too which helps if you want a more relaxed vibe.

For in-person classes in Bangkok, I'd check out Thai Language Hut near Thong Lo. They do small group classes and the teachers are patient with older learners, I've seen a few people in their 50s there. The pace is slower than Duke which can feel like a bootcamp. Also worth looking at Walen School in Asoke, they have a good mix of structured lessons and conversation practice. If you go the retirement visa route, you can take your time with a weekly schedule rather than rushing through a course.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
