More hippy or hipster neighborhood recommendations?

But now that I've had my fair share of that I want to stay away from these locations and find a more chill neighborhood to enjoy my last few days in BKK.

On the off chance, are there any hippy-ish vibe neighborhoods in BKK (like Pai vibes)? After traveling Thailand for 3 months and spending the latter half up north in chiangmai and Pai I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed about spending my last few days in BKK in the big city chaos. And if not hippy/chill vibes are there cool neighborhoods away from the tourist attraction (but ideally still close to BTS/MRT)?

Ari is prob your best bet for that Pai-ish feel. Soi 1 and Soi 2 off Phahon Yothin are full of old wooden shophouses turned into tiny cafes and guesthouses, and the crowd is more chill backpackers and Thai uni kids than tourists. It's on the BTS at Saphan Khwai or Ari station, so you can still get anywhere fast. Just dont expect much nightlife, its quiet by 10pm.

If you want something a bit more hipster than hippy, try Talat Noi near Hua Lamphong. Its technically Chinatown but the riverside part feels like a totally different world, with street art and vintage shops tucked in the alleys. Only downside is the MRT is a bit of a walk depending where you stay.

Banglamphu gets written off because it's next to Khao San, but if you walk ten minutes north toward Soi Samsen 1 to 5 you're in a totally different scene. It's old Thai shophouses, a few indie galleries, some legit local food stalls, and almost no backpacker energy once you're past the canal. No BTS or MRT nearby though, so you'd be relying on the river boat at Phra Athit pier or the bus, which might not suit you if you want quick access to the rest of the city.

If transit matters more, look at the area around Wang Lang across the river, near Siriraj. It's mostly Thai uni students and hospital workers, super relaxed, and the food at the market is some of the best in the city. You can hop the ferry to Tha Chang and connect from there.

the area around soi ari gets mentioned a lot but i'd actually push you a stop further to phaya thai / sam sen nai, the sois behind the BTS station. it's not hippy exactly but it's got that unhurried vibe, old shophouses, a couple of tiny record bars, and lots of office workers grabbing khao tom at night so it feels lived-in rather than touristy. BTS and the airport rail link both stop there so you're 15 min from basically anything. if you want the actual Pai feel you won't find it in BKK, but this is the closest low-key version with real transit.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
