anywhere to play street chess?

or should i just go to chatuchak and sit down with a board? or should i just go to chatuchak and sit down with a board?

Sanam Luang on the old town side draws a small crowd on weekend evenings, mostly locals who set up folding boards on the grass once the heat drops. It's less about finding a formal opponent and more about just sitting down and seeing who wanders over. Chatuchak is the easy fallback but honestly the chess there is incidental to the market, you'd get more games at any of the park spots. If you want something steady, the Ratchadamnoen area near the Democracy Monument has a few regulars most nights too.

Lumphini Park near the Silom entrance gets a few regulars in the late afternoon, mostly older guys who'll happily take on anyone. Chatuchak works too but it's really a weekend thing, the weekday market is mostly plants and wholesale. If you want a proper club scene, there's a group that meets at the Bangkok Chess Club, they post schedules online.

There's a rotating crew that plays at the benches along the Saen Saep canal near Pratunam, usually late morning before the heat gets brutal. Not organized or anything, you just show up with a board and someone will sit down. If you want guaranteed games though, the Chess Association of Thailand runs casual meetups at their place on Phetchaburi Road, small fee, air conditioned, and they actually have clocks. Chatuchak is a fine backup but you'll spend more time dodging tourists than playing.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
