Try the area around Soi Rang Nam near Phaya Thai. There are a few older apartment buildings that rent rooms by the night for 500-700 baht, like the ones behind the big Century Movie Plaza. They're nothing fancy but the location is solid with the BTS and airport link both a five minute walk. Just walk into the soi and look for "rooms for rent" signs in Thai, most don't advertise online.
In Asok, the budget options are mostly along Soi 19 and Soi 23 where you'll find a few older apartment-style guesthouses that don't list online. Walk down Sukhumvit Soi 23 past the Indian temple and you might spot signs for 500-700 baht rooms, but they're usually full. In Phaya Thai, the area around the old Din Daeng flats sometimes has monthly rentals that do nightly for around that price, but you're better off checking Facebook marketplace groups for "Phaya Thai short stay" than the big booking sites.
if u don't mind a bit of a walk, the area around saphan khwai bts has some small guesthouses for 500-700. it's one stop past ari on the bts line so about 10 mins to phaya thai and 15 to asok. there's a place called baan suan garden on soi phaholyothin 8 that does clean fan rooms for 600, the owners are a quiet older couple who keep the place spotless. not on the big booking sites either, u just show up and knock
best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026
yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
