I really wanna hang out with folks who dig the same vibes just getting high and sharing some insights into their playlists

God is an Astronaut, Carbon Based Lifeforms and many more are vibeeee

tbh the best part of this scene here is how random it is. i found a dude at a night market near Saphan Taksin selling bootleg cds of old polaris and 65daysofstatic, and he just started playing them off his phone while we smoked behind his stall. no stage, no crowd, just a guy who genuinely loved the genre and wanted to talk about it.

if u want a proper crowd tho, try the film screenings at House RCA, they sometimes pair silent or experimental movies with live ambient/post rock sets after. it's a weird mix but the crowd is always a few heads deep into the same stuff u listed. bring a flask, the drinks are overpriced but nobody checks ur bag.

for the nu metal itch, there's a karaoke joint on Soi Cowboy's edge that has a hidden room in the back, mostly thai office workers after 11pm screaming through chester bennington covers. it's chaotic and sweaty and honestly the most fun i've had in months. just don't bring ur own weed in there, the owner is cool but the security guy is a stickler for rules.

You're describing a pretty specific overlap of genres that Bangkok doesn't advertise much, but it's out there if you know where to look. For the post rock side, keep an eye on the schedule at Studio Lam on Sukhumvit 26, they occasionally book instrumental acts that lean heavier than the usual DJ sets, and the sound system there is brutal in the best way.

For the nu metal nostalgia, there's a small weekly meetup at a bar called The Circus on Sukhumvit 21, it's mostly expats and a few locals who rotate through 2000s alt rock playlists on a laptop hooked to the speakers. It's not a concert, more like a living room vibe with cheap beer and zero pretense, and people actually talk about the music instead of just nodding along.

If you're looking to smoke and dig deeper, the park near Wachirabenchathat, that's the Rot Fai Park on Kamphaeng Phet 3, has a quiet corner by the lake where a small group of regulars gather on weekend evenings with portable speakers. They're not a scene or anything official, just folks who share playlists and pass joints around, and I've heard some proper deep cuts there that never made it to any streaming algorithm. Just bring your own stash, the guards are chill but the dispensaries nearby will rinse you.

man u just named my whole playlist. carbon based lifeforms in this heat hits different, like ambient music for the sweat dripping off ur forehead lol. if u want that 2000s raw vibe, skip ari for a sec and check the basement bars near khao san's back alleys, there's this one place that does late night nu metal karaoke but it's mostly thai locals who know every word to faint. for the post rock side, there's a monthly gathering at union mall's rooftop parking lot, not official or anything, just people with bluetooth speakers and a few joints, god is an astronaut gets played a lot around 2am. bring ur own stash tho, the guards don't care but the weed prices around there are tourist tax level.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
