The trafficking angle gets thrown around a lot, but the reality is murkier. Most performers are adults who chose this work, though "chose" is doing a lot of heavy lifting when you consider how few other options they have. The real problem is the industry structure, no labor protections, no health checks, and venues that can drop you or push you into extras without recourse.

If you want to make the point to your friends without getting preachy, look up the Patpong night market vendors who've complained for years about the shows driving away family crowds and pushing rents up. That's a more concrete, everyday moral issue than trafficking claims that are hard to verify.

Better plan: take them to the Calypso Cabaret near Asiatique instead. It's a proper transgender cabaret with ticketed seating, professional choreography, and performers who have actual contracts. It's touristy but the talent is real and the vibe is way less skeezy. If they insist on the seedier stuff after that, they're not really looking for culture, they're looking for shock value.

honestly the trafficking thing is way overblown for most of these places, they're mostly adult performers doing it for money, not kidnapped teens. but that doesn't make them ethical, the working conditions are rough, no contracts, no safety nets, and the whole vibe is gross if u think about it for more than two seconds.

if ur friends are set on seeing something weird, skip patpong and check out a proper cabaret show instead, like the ones on khao san or the big transgender shows, those are at least organized and performers get paid decently. patpong is a tourist trap anyway, overpriced drinks and pushy touts, u won't miss anything by avoiding it.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

ur friends are probably picturing some dark web nightmare but the reality is way more boring and sad than scary. most of the women doing those shows are adults from poor provinces or across the border, they're not chained up but they're stuck in a system where the bar owner controls everything, including their schedule and what they're allowed to refuse. the underage thing does happen but it's not like every show has a kidnapped 15 year old, it's more like venues don't check IDs properly and cops look the other way.

a better angle for ur friends is the money trail. those shows charge like 300 baht entry but the drink prices are insane and the performers see maybe 10% of that. there's also the bar fine system where a customer can "buy out" a girl's night for 500-1000 baht, and if she refuses she owes that money to the bar. so even the ones who aren't trafficked are basically in debt bondage to the venue.

if they really want to see something weird, take them to the soi 4 ladyboy bars in nana instead, at least those are upfront about being entertainment and the performers have way more agency. or hit up the tawandang german brewery for a proper show that's just drunk people on stage, no exploitation needed. patpong is a tourist trap anyway, the whole soi smells like fish sauce and regret.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
