I have a UK account that allows me to exchange currencies in app with no fee and withdraw cash at a very low charge. However, I'm wondering if things like paying rent and utility bills will need to come from a Thai bank account? Is the process of opening an account as a foreigner easy?

yeah get the thai account. even if your uk card works for atm fees the qr code thing is huge here like the other person said. also some visa renewal stuff can be a pain without a local bank statement showing you have money coming in. i'd go with kasikorn over bangkok bank tbh, their app is way cleaner and you can do most stuff without going to a branch. just bring your rental agreement too if you have one, some branches get weird about proof of address even with the school letter

honestly you might get away with just using your uk card for atm withdrawals but the qr code thing is kinda a big deal here most everyday payments use it

You'll want a Thai account for rent and utilities. Most landlords here want a direct bank transfer or will hand you a QR code for payment, and the QR system only works with Thai banks. The good news is getting an account on an education visa is straightforward. Take your passport, visa, and a letter from your school to any branch of Bangkok Bank or Kasikorn and you'll be set in about 30 minutes. I'd recommend keeping your UK account for the exchange rates and using the Thai one just for local transfers and QR payments.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
