Where to stay in Bangkok?

siam is fine but honestly it's more shopping malls than actual bangkok vibe. for nightlife + rooftop pool + remote work, check out thong lo or ekkamai. tons of condos with infinity pools, cafes with solid wifi for daytime work, and the bts is right there. you can hit the main temples and palaces in 2-3 days easy from there, and nights out in thong lo are way more fun than siam imo. also june-july is rainy season so having a pool to chill in during afternoon downpours is clutch. look for something near thong lo bts station, maybe a 10 min walk max, you'll thank me later.

honestly, if you're working remote, think about where you'll actually be during the day, not just at night. siam is fine for malls but the wifi in a lot of those older condos is meh, and you'll pay tourist prices for everything around there. I'd point you toward phrom phong instead, it's one bts stop from thong lo but a bit quieter, and the emquartier mall has a solid food court for lunch breaks. for condos, look at the ones near benjasiri park, there's a few with rooftop pools and the park is a nice escape when you need a break from the screen. nightlife is a short grab ride away, and the bts gets you to the river for temples in under 30 mins. also june-july means random downpours, so a pool you can duck into when it rains beats being stuck in a mall crowd. budget around 28k to 35k baht for something decent with a view.

Thong Lo is the right call for what you're describing, but let me add a practical layer. If you're working remote, check the condo's internet speed before booking, a lot of the newer buildings in Ekkamai have fiber and proper desks, while older ones in Siam can be flaky. For sightseeing, you'll be taking the BTS to Saphan Taksin for the river boats anyway, and that's about 30 minutes from Thong Lo, which is fine. For nightlife, skip the tourist traps on Soi 11 and head to the bars around Ekkamai Soi 5 or the speakeasies off Thong Lo Soi 10, they're less packed and the crowd is more mixed. Also, June and July afternoons get proper thunderstorms, so a rooftop pool near your place beats being stuck in a mall. Look at buildings like Rhythm Ekkamai or the ones just off Thong Lo BTS, you'll find a pool with a view for around 25,000 to 35,000 baht a month.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
