honestly at 10k on Shopee the Dedica is kind of the default pick but the thing nobody tells u is the stock basket and tamper are pretty weak, so factor in another 1-2k for a bottomless portafilter and a decent tamper or you wont get much out of it. For asian brands, look at Gemilai, theyre a Guangzhou brand and the CRM3605 or 3007 models show up on Shopee TH around 6-9k, build feels cheaper but the pressure is more consistent than the Delica out of the box. HiBREW is another one, more of a pod plus ground hybrid, only worth it if you want both.

The Dedica is fine but check the voltage and plug situation before you buy, a lot of Shopee listings are 110V US imports and you'll need a step up transformer which adds cost and clutter. For Asian brands, Wacaco and Xiaomi's Mijia line are worth a look, the Mijia capsule machine is cheap but limited. Real talk though, at this budget most people end up upgrading within a year, so consider whether a used Gaggia or a Flair Neo plus a good hand grinder gets you further.

If you're open to buying used, the Bangkok market for secondhand machines is actually decent. Check the Facebook group "Espresso Buy Sell Thailand" or the classifieds on HomeBarista TH, people offload Gaggias and Rancilios when they upgrade. A used Gaggia Classic often lands around 8-12k and the internals are way more serviceable than anything new at that price, plus parts are everywhere on Lazada.

For new Asian brands, Gemilai gets mentioned a lot but also look at Donlim, they make machines for other labels and the build on their entry models is less plasticky than the price suggests. Whatever you pick, budget for a decent grinder first. A 10k machine with a 2k blade grinder will taste worse than a 5k machine with a proper burr grinder.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
