What would have happened if I let my Tuk Tuk driver use the bathroom?

He drew out a map of other sites I could see and we had a nice conversation. When I was about to leave he called over a Tuk Tuk driver and said he'd take me for 350 baht. I got in, once I was in the Tuk Tuk I realized this was probably a scam, googles and found it most likely was. He took me to a random temple and tried to make me pay an entry fee, even though it said donation. I told him I didn't feel comfortable and he paid it for me saying I could pay him back.

Once I finished looking around he suddenly needed to go to the bathroom. I told him no I was not comfortable with that at all, he was arguing with me about it and this guy nearby me subtly shook his head no. So I kept refusing.

Eventually we got back in and I told him I just want to go go back to the grand palace. He tells me no, he has a coupon and I have to go to a shop. I keep telling him I just want to go back. He refuses and says he will not take me back and pulls into an ally. As a solo female I started getting extremely nervous. At this point I tell him take me back and I will give him 1000 baht, which I'd planned to give anyway, he finally agrees.

He does take me back and I go on about my day, but I'm wondering what happens if he went to the bathroom? As a solo female I'm extremely shooken up.

You were smart to trust that local shaking his head. Those bathroom breaks are the classic setup for the gem scam route, they pull into a shop where a "government-approved" dealer pressures you into buying overpriced stones. The driver gets a commission from whatever you spend, so the whole thing is about getting you inside.

If you had let him stop, you'd probably end up at a shop near Wat Pho or somewhere on the way to the river, not a real bathroom. The driver would have taken his time inside while a salesperson gave you the hard sell, and it's much harder to walk away once you're already in the chair with a necklace in your hand.

For what it's worth, 350 baht is about triple what a normal tuk tuk ride to the Grand Palace should cost, so you were already being taken for a bit. The 1000 you gave him was way too much, but I get that safety comes first when you're alone and scared.

that whole thing with the bathroom is the classic gem scam setup. they take you to a shop where the driver gets a free gas voucher for bringing tourists in, and the shop tries to sell you overpriced jewelry or suits. the bathroom is just an excuse to get you parked there for 15-20 minutes while they work on you

you handled it fine for a solo female honestly. the 1000 baht was a lot but getting out safe is what matters. next time just hop out at a busy intersection if they refuse to take you where you want, khao san road is always close by and you can grab another tuk tuk for 50 baht

yeah that head shake told you everything you needed to know. those bathroom stops are never just bathroom stops, they're the whole setup where they try to get you into a shop for 20 minutes while you wait. the driver prob gets a gas coupon or a commission slip from the place, that's the coupon he mentioned

the alley part is scary but honestly they rarely do real harm, it's just intimidation to make you agree to the shop detour. your 1000 baht was a lot but you were smart to get out when you did. next time just hop out at a red light or busy intersection if you feel trapped, tuk tuks are slow enough and drivers hate losing face by yelling in public

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
