Going to Japan with the family this weekend, best option for exchanging baht for yen?

Better to exchange here at a money changer or there in Japan? Is using my Thai bank card there an option? Any other options for best rates? Better to exchange here at a money changer or there in Japan? Is using my Thai bank card there an option? Any other options for best rates?

SuperRich is the move for cash, but check their rates online the morning you go. The Thonglor branch on Soi 55 is usually less crowded than the Sukhumvit 33 one if you're near there. For the card option, you'd be better off opening a Wise account before you leave, no 220 baht fee and you lock the rate in advance. I've done both and the convenience of Wise beat carrying a wad of yen through security at Suvarnabhumi.

Honestly just exchange at SuperRich here before you go, the rates in Japan are worse for baht. Your Thai debit card works but the 220 baht fee per withdrawal adds up fast, I'd only use it for emergencies. Another option no one mentioned is to just withdraw yen from an ATM at Narita when you land, the exchange rate isn't terrible and you skip the hassle of carrying cash through security.

If you're carrying cash, do it here before you go. SuperRich on Soi Sukhumvit 33 usually gives better rates for yen than what you'll find at Japanese counters like Daikokuya in Shinjuku. Your Thai bank card works at most 7-Elevens and post offices in Japan, but you'll get hit with a 220 baht flat fee per withdrawal plus the Visa/Mastercard rate, so it's not worth it for small amounts. I'd bring maybe 70% in yen from here and rely on card for the rest.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
