Markets Open During Sangkran?
if you're near bangkok's old town, the khlong toei market operates year-round even during songkran. it's not a tourist market at all, just a massive wet market where vendors sell produce, meat, and flowers. go early morning around 6am before the heat kicks in and you'll see the real side of the city while most people are still sleeping off the water fights. bring an umbrella though, some paths get muddy
most of the weekend markets like chatuchak will be closed or running on a skeleton schedule during songkran proper. but if you're looking for something open, try the night markets in bangkok like talad rot fai srinakarin - they usually stay open even during holidays, though some vendors might be out celebrating. just expect it to be quieter than usual and bring cash since some stalls might not have signal for prompts
The big tourist markets like Asiatique and ICONSIAM will be open as usual during Songkran, they're more mall-like and don't really close for holidays. For street food, try the Suan Lum Night Bazaar Ratchada on Ratchadaphisek Road, it's smaller than the train market but stays fairly active since it's mostly locals eating.
If you want something specific to the holiday, head to Khao San Road on April 13. It's a mess of water fights and packed stalls selling everything from waterproof phone pouches to cheap beer, but the actual market vendors are there selling their usual stuff too. Just be prepared to get soaked from 10am onward.
