I love the vibe of the city, and tbh love how I feel when I'm in Bangkok. In the past I've jumped around from various AirBnBs in different parts of the city.. some great experiences, others not so much. I'd love to find a place of my own to spend minimum of 3 months a year at, most likely more. My question is.. do I continue to AirBnb hop, use Agoda, etc. or should I look into buying or renting my own place. I love the idea of having a place year round so I can come and go when I want. I'm also wondering if it's realistic that I could rent it out when I'm not there. I know there are a lot of restrictions on this though, and I'd really need to dig in and do research, which I'm willing to do. Anyone who lives in Bangkok or has set up something similar for themselves, a home base in the city to come and go as you please part time, I'd love to learn about your experiences and how you set this up for yourself. I find the Thai people very warm and welcoming, I'd only want to do this in a legal way, I'm not interested in trying to get around the laws... just want to create a welcoming home base for myself in one of my favorite cities. PS. I'm from the US and work remotely and really love the amenities of the various high-rise condo buildings I've stayed in. Obviously would need to be near to one of the metro lines.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
