Shopping a bike from Thailand to Europe? Affordable options?

Hi there,

I'm looking to have a big box with a bike picked up in Thailand and shipped to Europe. Anyone who has moved such bigger things has an advice for a shipping company to go with?

Thanks!

if u buy the bike here, check if the seller offers their own shipping first, some shops have deals with freight agents that beat anything u find online. but if ur doing it solo, i'd skip the port area entirely and use a company that does "personal effects" shipping, they're used to weird oversized stuff like bikes and surfboards. got quoted 9,500 baht for a box to berlin via one near asok, took 6 weeks, and they included insurance for like 300 baht extra which is worth it cause thai customs can be random about bike parts, i had a friend get a wheelset held for a week over a "carbon fiber" declaration. also, weigh the box before u seal it, freighters often have a free allowance and u can avoid the volume surcharge by keeping it under 30kg, some agents won't even tell u that

fwiw i'd skip the big freight forwarders entirely and hit up a shop that builds export bikes, like the ones around chatuchak market. some of them ship frames and complete bikes weekly to europe and they'll pack it way better than you ever could, plus they know the exact box sizes that avoid the volume surcharge. i saw a guy at probike in bangna quote a full carbon road bike to france for 9,000 baht door to door, took 7 weeks, and he handled the thai export paperwork which is a pain if u do it solo. one thing nobody mentions, make sure the box has wooden reinforcement on the corners, thai handlers at the port are not gentle and a crushed box is a real risk for a carbon frame. also, if ur bike has hydraulic brakes, add a note saying the fluid was drained or customs might hold it for inspection, that's a 3 week delay i've seen happen twice

honestly, if it's a full bike box, sea freight is your best bet, not air. check with local movers around Klong Toei port, they'll consolidate with other cargo and it's way cheaper than DHL or FedEx. a friend shipped a mountain bike to Germany last year, paid around 8,000 baht for a 20kg box, took about 6 weeks. just make sure you pack it really tight, and declare it as "used sporting goods" to avoid customs headaches on the EU side. also, avoid the big names near Sukhumvit, they'll quote you double for the same service if you walk in off the street.

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
