Hello, planning to visit Bangkok from 2nd Jul to 6th Jul. Hoping to get some input and advice for one of our itineraries.

Basically, I wanted to visit Wat Sam Phran. I understand this is a bit away from Bangkok. Is this temple accessible by public transport? Or is it more advisable to get a Grab. In addition, we were hoping to swing by 'After The Rain Coffee and Gallery' for lunch before heading back to Bangkok. How's the availability of Grab in that area? Would you recommend hiring a private car instead? Is this a good half a day trip - and worth sparing our time for? Is the temple open everyday or is there a certain day that one recommend to get there?

Thanks!

Wat Sam Phran is worth the trip if you're into unique architecture, but getting there is the main challenge. Public transport won't get you close, and the local bus options from the Pink Line or Central Pinklao can be confusing and time-consuming. A Grab from central Bangkok will run you around 400-500 baht one way, and availability around the temple is fine for getting to After The Rain, which is maybe 10-15 minutes south.

After The Rain is a solid choice for lunch, though it can get busy on weekends. The cafe has a nice canal-side setup with paddle boats, and their pad thai wrapped in egg is a good pick. For the whole trip, I'd budget about 4-5 hours including travel, and it's a nice break from the usual temple circuit if you're not rushed. The temple itself is open daily, usually from 8am to 5pm, but July's rainy season means you might get a sudden downpour around midday so aim for the morning if you can.

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
