Am I crazy or does Bangkok smell bizarrely bad?

You're not crazy. That specific stretch of Sukhumvit around Asok has the khlong (canal) running right through it and it's basically an open sewer combined with decades of street runoff. The heat just amplifies everything.

Try walking up Soi Nana (the residential one near Asok, not the tourist one) or cut through the back streets between Sukhumvit 16 and 22. The smell is much less intense there because you're not right on top of the drainage system. Also, the air quality in general is worse at street level versus walking on the BTS skywalk.

Your nose will go numb to it in about 48 hours. Most people hit that wall on day one, then it just becomes background noise.

yeah Asok is rough, that khlong right there is basically an open sewer mixed with whatever stalls dump in it. plus the heat cooks everything together in a way that hits you different than any western city smell

try walking up to Soi 31 or 33, the side streets get a bit more shade and less of that direct drain smell. or honestly just hop on the BTS to somewhere like Phrom Phong and hang around Benchasiri Park for a bit, the air is noticeably better there even though it's still central

your nose will adjust in a couple days though, everyone goes through it. just keep a mask on for now or find a cafe with ac to hide in when it gets too much

nah you're not crazy, that's just Bangkok in certain spots. Asok and Sukhumvit are especially rough because you've got the canal right there plus all the street drains mixed with traffic fumes and hot food stalls. It's like a weird combo of fermented sewage, fried garlic, and diesel.

if you head over to somewhere like Ari or Thonglor the air is noticeably cleaner, less of that canal funk hanging around. Or just duck into any 7-Eleven for a moment to reset your nose, it works every time

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
