What the hell goes on in these buildings? Why are they the size of hotels? I've lived here 5 years and have never heard anyone even mention them.

The owners must be absolutely loaded to own these huge buildings and pieces of land but something about them seem strange. Maybe a bit of nefarious activity re: money laundering or brothel I guess?

Has anyone in this community been inside?

honestly theyre just massive entertainment centers with a bunch of stuff crammed inside. think bowling alleys, karaoke rooms, arcades, sometimes even a small movie theater or a gym. the ones near ratchada are pretty popular with thai families on weekends. theyre not really sketchy in a criminal way, more like a one-stop shop for hanging out without having to go outside in the heat.

the size is because they need to fit parking for hundreds of cars plus all the different venues. some have hotels on the upper floors too. the owners are usually real estate companies or big conglomerates, not some shady figure. the money laundering thing gets thrown around a lot but ive never seen anything to back it up.

ngl i've been in a few, mostly for the karaoke rooms. the ones near ratchada are family-friendly, but the ones further out like on rama 2 or out near muang thong thani are more... let's say "flexible" with what goes on. some have massage parlors tucked in the back that aren't just foot rubs, if you catch my drift

the money laundering thing is probably overblown but i've heard from a friend who worked at one that the accounting is "creative" - like they'll claim a bowling lane is booked 24/7 but it's empty at 3pm on a tuesday. the owners are usually connected to local politicians or construction companies, that's how they get the land

if you're curious, the one at central plaza ladprao has a legit bowling alley and a decent food court on the ground floor. go during weekday afternoons, it's dead quiet and you can just walk around without anyone bothering you

I've been inside a few for birthday parties and work events. The big ones are just like indoor malls but focused on activities instead of shopping. Think laser tag, karaoke, pool halls, and a bunch of food stalls. The vibe is pretty normal honestly, especially in the newer ones near the outskirts. The sketchy reputation comes from the older ones where the top floors have "massage" places that aren't really massage places, but the main floors are fine for families.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
