Floating Markets I have no interest in visiting while some burger places here are definitely better more Instagram than actual taste.

Thoughts?

tbh the whole thonglor hipster cafe scene is way more overhyped than any temple. you got these places charging 250 baht for a basic iced latte with some stupid flower on top and people queue for 40 minutes to get a photo on a concrete bench. mother roaster is alright but the wait is ridiculous for what you get

also gotta say asoke is prob the most photographed intersection in bangkok but it's literally just a mess of traffic and skytrain pillars. people act like it's cyberpunk but really it's just a headache to cross

if you want actual good coffee without the circus just hit up factory coffee near bts phaya thai. no instagram nonsense just solid espresso

You're right about the burger places. I'd add that whole Khao San Road Instagram set where people pose with buckets of booze and those neon sign bars. It's just a sweaty corridor of drunk backpackers and the same pad thai carts you see everywhere else. If you want that chaotic Bangkok energy without the tourist tax, walk through Saphan Phut night market instead. Same vibe, half the price, and you'll actually see locals shopping for clothes instead of people filming tiktoks.

honestly the biggest offender for me is chinatown at night. yeah the neon signs look cool in photos but in reality you're elbow to elbow with people and every vendor is selling the same 3 things at markup. yaowarat road at 8pm is just a sweaty shuffle with 200 baht oyster omelettes that taste average at best

the bangkok art and culture centre is another one. people take those spiral walkway shots like it's some architectural masterpiece but the exhibitions are usually mid and half the floors are empty. i'd rather walk through siam square soi 1 and look at the street art for free

if you want a genuinely good photo spot that isn't a circus try the rooftop at river city bangkok. it's quiet, you get the temple and river views without the instagram mobs, and there's a decent cafe there called viva & aviv that's actually good

best som tam in Bangkok? Krua Dok Mai Kao 2026

Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but I've always found their som tam a bit tame on the pla ra. If you want the real funky version, try the shophouse spots along Soi Udomsuk 26, near the night market end. They pound it fresh with fermented fish that'll clear your sinuses, and it's like 60 baht. Different style from the On Nut places, more Lao-leaning.

for som tam specifically i'd say the Isaan spots in Chatuchak are underrated, weekdays only though since the weekend crowd ruins the vibe. there's a stall near gate 2 that does tam pa with fermented bamboo shoots, super sour and funky, not something you see much in On Nut. if you're already heading north for Or Tor Kor anyway its worth the detour.

honestly the som tam at Krua Dok Mai Kao is good but what got me hooked is their nam prik pla raa dip with the raw veggies, that funk hits way harder than the papaya does. think most people sleep on it cuz they just order the som tam and gai yang. also pro tip, go before noon on weekdays, after that teh pla ra gets milder cuz they batch it for the lunch rush
